Livemocha was established in 2007 by serial entrepreneur Shirish Nadkarni and Krishnan Seshadrinathan. The concept emerged from Nadkarni's observation that traditional language education often failed to deliver conversational fluency, inspiring a web-based platform that leveraged social networking for practical language practice. Before Livemocha, Nadkarni founded TeamOn Systems, a mobile email pioneer acquired by BlackBerry, and started his career at Microsoft, where he was involved in the Hotmail acquisition. Seshadrinathan also had a background in technology, later co-founding Zoomingo and joining Coinbase as VP of Engineering.

The company positioned itself as an online language learning community, blending structured lessons with peer-to-peer interaction. Its core market consisted of global language learners, with a significant user base outside the U.S., particularly in countries like Brazil, China, and Russia. Livemocha operated on a freemium business model. It provided free basic courses in over 35 languages, which included lessons on vocabulary and grammar, along with exercises for reading, writing, and speaking. Revenue was primarily generated through premium subscriptions for more advanced "Active Courses" in languages like English, Spanish, and French, which offered features like unlimited access to materials, video and audio downloads, and expert reviews of exercises. The platform also served corporate clients, such as Google and News Corp, who subsidized courses for their employees.

A key feature of the Livemocha platform was its social learning component, which connected learners with native speakers for practice and feedback. This peer-to-peer system allowed members to have their writing and speaking exercises reviewed by the community, fostering a collaborative environment. The platform's methodology was based on a "Whole-Part-Whole" model, where users would first observe a real-life conversation, then deconstruct the vocabulary and grammar, and finally practice the new concepts. Having amassed over 16 million members, Livemocha was acquired by its competitor, Rosetta Stone, in April 2013 for $8.5 million in cash. The acquisition was intended to accelerate Rosetta Stone's transition to a cloud-based service model. However, the Livemocha community was permanently closed on April 22, 2016.
