Limatica is a German DeepTech startup operating in the battery technology sector, founded in Chemnitz in 2023. The company was established by co-founders Bastian Ruther (CEO), Dr.-Ing. Paul Büschel (CIO), and Thomas Günther (CTO). The founders' backgrounds are deeply rooted in the battery and automotive industries; Büschel completed his PhD in Li-ion diagnosis and, along with Günther, gained practical experience at ThyssenKrupp in hardware and software for battery formation equipment. Ruther's professional experience was developed at Capgemini Invent and Polestar, where he focused on business development and go-to-market strategies.
The firm is developing a hardware and software solution to drastically accelerate battery cell quality assessment. Limatica employs a novel measurement method leveraging noise analysis, a technique from electrochemistry, combined with AI models to determine a battery cell's quality. This approach aims to reduce the quality assurance process, known as cell aging, from several days to just minutes. The technology promises to characterize batteries up to 100 times faster and with greater precision than conventional methods, significantly cutting costs and scrap rates for manufacturers.
Limatica's primary clients are battery manufacturers. The core of its business is a portable lab tester capable of evaluating multiple cells simultaneously, combined with powerful analytics software. By providing deeper data insights almost instantly, the company helps clients optimize production, enhance cell quality, and make their manufacturing processes more sustainable. While its go-to-market strategy is being refined, the initial focus is on optimizing the cell aging process. Future applications could extend to evaluating used cells for second-life purposes and identifying failure modes in R&D. The company secured €1.4 million in a pre-seed funding round in late 2024 from investors including kopa ventures, Bloomhaus, and Heartfelt.
