LightSail Education provides an adaptive digital literacy platform for the K-12 education sector, designed to enhance students' reading and writing skills. The company was founded in 2012 by Gideon Stein and Steven Gittleson. Stein, an entrepreneur with a background in both for-profit tech and non-profit education organizations, was inspired to create a scalable literacy solution while serving as Vice Chairman of Success Academy Charter Schools and President of Future Is Now Schools. Gittleson, with over two decades of experience in large-scale software development, joined as co-founder and CTO to build the platform's technology from its inception.
The company's business model is centered on providing its software to K-12 schools, districts, and literacy intervention programs through a subscription-based service. Initially, the base subscription was around $10 per student. LightSail also generates revenue by allowing schools to purchase additional digital books from a vast catalog of over 150,000 titles from major publishers via its integrated e-commerce platform. The platform serves a diverse client base, from individual schools and homeschoolers to entire districts and government programs, both in the U.S. and internationally.
LightSail's core product is an adaptive reading platform that personalizes the learning experience for each student. It starts with an initial assessment to determine a student's Lexile reading level, then creates a customized digital library from over 80,000 texts to match their ability and interests. The library includes a mix of fiction and non-fiction, with thousands of books available in both English and Spanish at no additional cost. A key feature is the embedding of in-text assessments, such as multiple-choice, cloze, and written-response questions, which monitor comprehension in real-time. This allows the platform to dynamically adjust the difficulty of texts, ensuring students are consistently challenged. For educators, the platform provides a real-time data dashboard with analytics on student reading behavior, comprehension, and growth, enabling targeted instruction. The platform also includes tools for students with learning challenges like Dyslexia and ADHD, a Fluency Builder module for struggling readers, and a writing module that supports the entire writing process.
Throughout its history, LightSail has achieved several milestones, including raising a total of $25.7M in funding from investors like Scott Cook, the Bezos Family Foundation, and Project Literacy. The company has received numerous accolades, including top honors in the Gates Foundation's Literacy Courseware Challenge and a 5-star rating from Common Sense Media. In February 2018, LightSail was acquired by Agile Investment Group, a private equity firm. Subsequently, in March 2023, the company was acquired by MindPlay Education, a provider of digital learning solutions.
