Lightroom is a London-based venue for original, artist-led audio-visual experiences. It opened in 2023 in King's Cross and is a joint venture between 59 Productions, a design studio and production company, and the London Theatre Company, led by Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr. The venue is a four-storey, purpose-built space designed by Haworth Tompkins, featuring a 360-degree gallery and advanced sound technology to host immersive shows.
The company collaborates directly with leading artists to create its programming. Its inaugural show was "David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away)," which used large-scale projection and audio to guide audiences through the artist's creative process. This was followed by "The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks," offering an immersive perspective on the Apollo moon missions, co-written by Hanks and Christopher Riley. Lightroom has also announced future collaborations, including a show with the magazine Vogue.
The business model centers on selling tickets for these long-running, technologically sophisticated exhibitions. It targets a broad audience interested in art, culture, and novel entertainment formats, positioning itself as a new home for creative innovation. The project was developed by Nicholas Hytner, former director of the National Theatre, and Nick Starr, who serves as the venue's CEO.
