LiFi Beam provides data transfer solutions utilizing the Visible Light Spectrum, a technology known as Light Fidelity (LiFi). This method serves as an alternative to traditional radio frequency-based communications like WiFi, using light to transmit data. The technology works by modulating the intensity of LED light at high speeds, which is then detected by a receiving device. This process allows for high-speed data transfer, with demonstrated speeds reaching up to 42 Gigabytes per second. The core technology, LiFi, was first introduced by Professor Harald Haas in a 2011 TEDGlobal talk.
The company targets both public and private sector clients for various applications, including vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. One major initiative involves integrating their technology into public street lighting, allowing municipalities to monetize their infrastructure by selling spectrum assets to mobile network providers facing capacity issues. Other applications are in development for retail sites to enhance customer experiences and for medical facilities, including robotic surgery centers. In September 2021, LiFi Beam announced the completion of a $17 million Series A funding round to expand its manufacturing capabilities and accelerate project pipelines, particularly its street lighting rollouts.
