Lieferheld GmbH emerged in 2010 as a key player in the German food delivery market, founded by Mohammadi Akhabach, Nikita Fahrenholz, Markus Fuhrmann, and Claude Ritter with support from the startup incubator Team Europe. The company established an online marketplace, available via website and mobile apps, that enabled consumers to conveniently browse local restaurant menus, place orders, and complete transactions digitally. Its revenue model was commission-based, charging partner restaurants a fee for each order facilitated through the platform.
In early 2012, the rapidly expanding Delivery Hero, a global online food ordering platform established in May 2011 by Niklas Östberg, Kolja Hebenstreit, Markus Fuhrmann, and Lukasz Gadowski, acquired Lieferheld as part of its initial European expansion strategy. This acquisition marked a significant step in a fierce market consolidation phase. The competitive landscape was further reshaped in August 2014 when Delivery Hero acquired its largest German competitor, pizza.de, solidifying its dominant position in the market by operating both Lieferheld and pizza.de as distinct brands.
The final chapter for Lieferheld as a standalone brand came in December 2018, when Delivery Hero divested its entire German portfolio, including Lieferheld, Pizza.de, and Foodora, to the Netherlands-based competitor Takeaway.com for approximately €930 million. This strategic exit allowed Delivery Hero to refocus its capital on other international growth markets. Following the acquisition, Takeaway.com announced its intention to merge the acquired brands under its primary German brand, Lieferando, effectively dissolving the Lieferheld brand.
