In 1984, a personal challenge sparked a business innovation. Investment adviser Bob Lemire, concerned by his son's struggles with dyslexia, decided to take action. He saw that many children lacked the resources his family had access to. Lemire partnered with neurologist Dr. Edwin Cole and technology expert Dr. Littleton Meeks. Together, they founded Lexia to leverage emerging computer technology for personalized reading instruction. Initially focused on students with dyslexia, Lexia expanded its mission in 1992 to assist all beginning and struggling readers. This marked a pivotal shift from a niche tool to a foundational resource. The company pioneered the use of computers to deliver systematic and adaptive literacy instruction, a novel concept at the time. Their singular focus on literacy, grounded in the science of reading, became their core strength. The company’s journey involved strategic integrations to enhance its offerings. A significant milestone occurred in 2020 when Lexia was acquired by Cambium Learning Group as part of Cambium's acquisition of Rosetta Stone. This move was intentional, aiming to create a powerhouse in K-12 literacy. Shortly after, in 2021, Cambium combined Lexia with another of its brands, Voyager Sopris Learning, to form a literacy "super brand" under the Lexia Learning name. Today, Lexia serves millions of students across thousands of schools, a testament to a father's vision to help his child.
