Established in 1999 in Ottawa, Ontario, by Peter Sandiford, Level Platforms initially operated as a managed service provider (MSP) for small and medium-sized businesses. A strategic pivot in 2003 shifted the company's focus to software development, leveraging its firsthand MSP experience to build tools for the growing remote monitoring and management (RMM) market. This led to the launch of its flagship product, Managed Workplace, in May 2004, which was offered in both on-premises and cloud editions.
The company's business model centered on licensing its Managed Workplace software to IT service providers, valued-added resellers (VARs), and MSPs, who used the platform to serve their own small and midsized business clients. This platform provided a single, web-based dashboard for comprehensive IT environment management. Key features included automated monitoring and alerting for system health and performance, detailed network asset discovery, patch management, and remote control capabilities. Over the years, the product evolved to include specialized modules for managing printers, mobile devices (MDM) from manufacturers like Apple and Google, and cloud services such as Office 365. The platform also offered white-label Network Operations Center (NOC) and Help Desk services, allowing its partners to offer 24/7 support.
Level Platforms demonstrated significant market traction, expanding its partner base to over 1,500 MSPs across 30 countries. This growth and the strength of its RMM technology culminated in the company's acquisition by AVG Technologies in June 2013 for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition was part of a broader industry consolidation trend and aimed to integrate Level Platforms' RMM and MDM capabilities with AVG's CloudCare security services. Following the acquisition, founder Peter Sandiford departed from AVG in January 2014, and Level Platforms was eventually merged into its parent company.
