Les Dorloteurs d'Abeilles is an initiative launched by Un Toit Pour Les Abeilles to protect solitary wild bees. The project was started by Régis Lippinois, a passionate beekeeper from Charente-Maritime who founded Un Toit Pour Les Abeilles in 2010 to support honey bees and traditional beekeeping through a hive sponsorship model. Recognizing the threats faced by wild bees, whose populations have declined significantly, the company launched Les Dorloteurs d’Abeilles in early 2020.
The company offers a subscription-based service targeting individuals, companies, schools, and communities. Clients receive a specially designed wooden shelter called a "Dorlotoir" to place in their garden or on a balcony. These shelters serve as nests for solitary bees—which do not produce honey or sting—to lay their eggs. At the end of the season, customers send the cocoons back to the company. The team at Les Dorloteurs d'Abeilles then cleans the cocoons, protects them from parasites and predators over the winter in optimal conditions, and returns them to the subscribers in the spring to hatch. This process is designed to increase the survival rate of the bees and re-establish local populations, as the cocoons are always returned to their region of origin.
This model aims to educate the public about the crucial role of wild bees, which are considered up to four times more effective at pollination than honey bees, particularly for early-flowering fruit trees. The business generates revenue through the sale of Dorlotoirs and monthly subscriptions that cover the overwintering service and educational support. The initiative has been successfully funded through crowdfunding campaigns on platforms like KissKissBankBank and Ulule.
