LemonStand eCommerce

LemonStand eCommerce Inc. was a Canadian company that provided a cloud-based eCommerce platform for online retailers. Founded by Danny Halarewich, the company originated from his freelance web design work which began when he was 14. Halarewich noticed a gap in the market between limiting platforms for small businesses and expensive, complex enterprise solutions, which inspired the creation of LemonStand.

The company's initial software, written in PHP, launched in 2001 as a licensed, on-premises product. A significant shift occurred in December 2013 with the public release of a cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) version of the platform. This subscription-based model targeted growing businesses, developers, and digital marketers, providing them with a flexible and customizable platform to scale their online stores. The platform was designed to be highly adaptable, offering features like design flexibility and checkout customization, and it did not charge transaction fees. LemonStand's clients included notable companies such as Bose and Zendesk.

The company secured seed funding in June 2012 from BDC Venture Capital and a group of angel investors, followed by another funding round in May 2016. In March 2019, LemonStand announced it would be shutting down its services, and the platform was officially discontinued on June 5, 2019. The shutdown coincided with a quiet "acqui-hire" by Mailchimp at the end of February 2019. Mailchimp, a marketing automation platform, acquired the LemonStand team to integrate more robust e-commerce features into its own offerings, particularly following its separation from Shopify. Following the acquisition, founder Danny Halarewich took on the role of Head of Commerce at Mailchimp.
