LawExplorer
Legal intelligence and regulatory compliance monitoring service.
LawExplorer, founded in 2004, is a South African company providing legal, regulatory, and compliance products and services. The company was acquired by the Belgium-based legal intelligence company Afriwise on August 1, 2025, in a move to expand its services across the African continent.
The firm serves a range of clients including corporations, regulators, and public entities across various industries. Notable clients include approximately 50 Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Listed Groups, such as Vodacom, AIG, Absa, Citibank, BMW, and Standard Bank, as well as institutions like the JSE and the South African Reserve Bank.
LawExplorer's core offerings are centered around providing up-to-date information on regulatory developments to help clients manage legal and compliance risks effectively. Its main product, the Sentinel platform, offers monitoring and intelligence on legislation, regulations, and case law in South Africa and several other African countries. The service provides tailored alerts and access to an independently maintained statutory database. Other products include Media Watch, a daily news monitoring service; Risk Manager, a compliance risk management solution; and Retention Guide, an online database for record retention and destruction requirements.
The acquisition by Afriwise is intended to integrate LawExplorer's extensive regulatory database to enhance and train a new retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) AI tool, which is scheduled for launch in South Africa. This strategic acquisition combines Afriwise's broad African coverage with LawExplorer's deep regulatory monitoring capabilities.
