Kudo, now operating as GrabKios, was established in July 2014 as an online-to-offline (O2O) platform designed to bridge the digital divide for Indonesia's vast unbanked and less tech-savvy population. The company was founded by Albert Lucius and Agung Nugroho, who conceived the idea while studying for their MBAs at the Haas School of Business. Lucius brought a rich technical background with degrees in computer science and professional experience at Apple, Goldman Sachs, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Nugroho complemented this with his own experience in management consulting at BCG, focusing on the telecommunication and infrastructure sectors.

The venture was created to address a significant market opportunity: at the time, approximately 64% of Indonesia's population was unbanked, and internet penetration was only around 20%. Kudo's business model hinges on a network of agents, enabling individuals and small traditional retailers, known as *warungs*, to become digital entrepreneurs. These agents use the Kudo application on their devices to facilitate a variety of digital transactions for customers who may lack bank accounts, credit cards, or trust in online shopping. Customers can pay cash to agents for services such as mobile phone top-ups, utility bill payments, e-commerce purchases from aggregated platforms like Lazada and Bukalapak, and travel ticket booking. This model provides a source of income for the agents while giving offline customers access to the digital economy.

A pivotal moment in the company's history occurred in April 2017 when it was acquired by Grab, Southeast Asia's ride-hailing giant, for a sum reported to be between $80 million and $100 million. The acquisition was a strategic move for Grab to expand its digital payments platform, GrabPay, into Indonesia's smaller cities and rural areas where Kudo had a strong presence. Following the acquisition, Kudo was integrated into Grab's ecosystem and, in late 2019, officially rebranded to GrabKios by Kudo. This integration expanded the services available to agents, adding offerings like package delivery, gold savings, micro-insurance, and access to capital. By 2019, the platform had grown to empower over 2.6 million agents across more than 500 Indonesian cities.
