Kontera was a digital content intelligence and marketing technology company founded in 2003 by Yoav Shaham and Assaf Henkin. The company developed a patented technology for real-time semantic analysis of web page content. This technology allowed Kontera to provide an in-text advertising platform that hyperlinked specific words or phrases within an article to display relevant advertisements when a user hovered over them, a service known as ContentLink. This approach was designed to be less intrusive than sidebar ads, as the advertisements only appeared upon user engagement.
The company's platform was utilized by both publishers, who could monetize their websites, and advertisers, who could reach targeted audiences through text, rich media, and video ad units. Kontera's business model was based on pay-per-click (PPC) revenue. In addition to its advertising solutions, Kontera developed a content marketing platform that included tools for content discovery, insights, amplification, and measurement, leveraging big data analytics to help marketers understand consumer interests.
In June 2014, Kontera was acquired by Amobee, a digital marketing subsidiary of Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel), for approximately $150 million. The acquisition was part of Amobee's strategy to enhance its digital marketing platform with Kontera's real-time content analysis capabilities, aiming to provide advertisers with better insights for their campaigns across mobile, web, and social networks. Following the acquisition, Kontera, along with another acquired company Adconion, was unified under the Amobee brand in September 2014. Subsequently, the Amobee brand, including the integrated technologies from Kontera, was rebranded as Nexxen in June 2023 after Amobee itself was acquired by Tremor International.
