Founded in Madrid in 2012 by serial entrepreneur Gustavo García Brusilovsky, Klikin emerged as a technology firm aiming to digitize local commerce. Brusilovsky, known for co-founding the e-commerce platform BuyVIP which was acquired by Amazon in 2010, leveraged his extensive experience in building scalable technology platforms to address the needs of small and medium-sized businesses. Klikin's journey includes a significant Series A funding round on September 10, 2015, raising $1.9 million from investors including Open Future and Caixa Capital Risc.
The company developed a comprehensive customer management and loyalty platform designed primarily for the restaurant and retail sectors. For consumers, Klikin offered a mobile application that replaced traditional loyalty cards with an intelligent points program, allowing users to earn and redeem 'Kliks' for rewards at partner businesses. The app also facilitated direct ordering, payments, and restaurant reservations. For businesses, Klikin provided a powerful dashboard to create and manage targeted promotional campaigns, track customer activity, and communicate directly with clients via email and push notifications. The company also offered white-label app solutions, enabling businesses to have a branded digital presence without upfront investment.
Klikin's trajectory shifted significantly following a strategic partnership with the multi-energy company Repsol. In late 2017, Repsol acquired a 70% stake in the startup to bolster its own mobile payment and promotions app, Waylet. This collaboration proved fruitful, and by February 2021, Repsol acquired the remaining 30% from the founding partners, taking full ownership. The acquisition was a key part of Repsol's strategy to expand its digital customer base and consolidate Waylet as a leading mobility payment app in Spain. Following the complete acquisition by Repsol, Klikin's technology and team became integral to managing and developing Repsol's digital assets, including the Waylet app, which now serves over nine million users. Subsequently, in September 2022, the original Klikin business line focused on a digital platform for restaurants was acquired from Repsol by Last.app, a restaurant management software company.
