Kintera, Inc. was a Software as a Service (SaaS) provider that offered solutions for nonprofit and government organizations to enhance their fundraising, outreach, and operational efficiency. The company was incorporated in February 2000 as VirtualDonors.com, Inc. by Harry E. Gruber and two partners, officially changing its name to Kintera, meaning "Knowledge Interaction," in July 2000. Gruber led the company as CEO, taking it public in 2003 and pursuing an aggressive growth strategy by acquiring over a dozen smaller software companies to expand its capabilities.

Kintera's primary offering was the Kintera Sphere® technology platform, a social constituent relationship management (CRM) system. This platform provided tools for donor management, email communications, website creation, event management, advocacy programs, wealth screening, and accounting. One of its flagship products was the "Friends Asking Friends" email-based fundraising service, which enabled supporters to create personalized pages for virtual door-to-door solicitation. The company generated revenue through transaction fees on donations and monthly maintenance fees for its web-based services.

By 2007, Kintera served approximately 4,000 customers, including prominent organizations like the American Lung Association and the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and reported revenues of $44.9 million for that year. In March 2007, Richard N. LaBarbera replaced Gruber as CEO. On May 29, 2008, Blackbaud, Inc., a leading software provider for nonprofits, announced its acquisition of Kintera for approximately $46.0 million in an all-cash deal. The acquisition was completed in July 2008, and Kintera became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Blackbaud, which continued to support Kintera's product offerings, including Kintera Sphere®, Kintera FundWare®, and the P!N Electronic Screening® service.
