Originating as a spin-out from the University of Glasgow in 2002, Kelvin Connect Ltd carved a niche in the critical communications market by developing mobile data systems for public safety organizations. The company was managed by CEO Simon Hardy and Technical Director Meurig Sage, with Campbell McClelland also being a co-founder. The firm's foundation was built upon advanced research conducted at the university, which translated into practical mobile solutions.
Kelvin Connect's core business involved creating and deploying mobile data capture and management systems for large organizations with a mobile workforce, primarily targeting the law enforcement and healthcare sectors. Revenue was generated through the sale and implementation of its software solutions. The company's flagship product, PRONTO, functioned as a comprehensive electronic notebook and mobile information management system for police officers. It replaced the traditional paper notebook, enabling officers in the field to electronically capture data for reports and witness statements on handheld devices.
The PRONTO system provided secure, real-time access to national and local police databases, such as the Police National Computer, directly from the field. This functionality streamlined workflows, significantly reduced the time officers spent on paperwork back at the station, and improved the quality and immediacy of data. A key milestone occurred in 2011 when the company was acquired by Airwave Solutions, the provider of Great Britain's emergency services communication network, for a seven-figure sum. This event was followed by Motorola Solutions' acquisition of Airwave in 2016, integrating Kelvin Connect and its PRONTO technology into Motorola's global public safety portfolio.
