Karuvi
Indian-manufactured power tools for professionals.
Karuvi is a mechatronics startup that designs, engineers, and manufactures a range of power tools for professional and industrial use. The company was incorporated on February 22, 2022, and is based in Chennai, India. Karuvi was co-founded by Sridhar Vembu, the CEO of Zoho Corporation, and Tony Thomas. The idea for the venture originated when Abdul Gafoor, founder of Mr. Light Global, suggested to Vembu that Zoho should manufacture handheld tools as a way to create rural employment opportunities.
As a new venture from the founder of software giant Zoho, Karuvi represents a significant move into the hardware and manufacturing sector. The company received an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Zoho in June 2024. This investment is part of Zoho's broader strategy to foster deep-tech know-how and manufacturing capabilities within India, with a particular focus on rural development. In July 2024, Karuvi opened its first assembly factory in Mathapuram, a village in the Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu, training and employing local youth. The business model focuses on creating high-quality, durable, and affordable tools with a high percentage of locally sourced components, currently around 95%.
The product lineup includes corded and cordless drills, angle grinders, rotary hammers, and saws. The company plans to expand its portfolio to at least 30 products by the end of 2025, with future offerings expected to include batteries and hand tools. Karuvi aims to sell its products through a strong network of authorized dealers and professionals, emphasizing post-sales service and support.
