Just Energy

Just Energy Group Inc. is a retail energy provider that supplies electricity and natural gas to residential and commercial customers across the United States and Canada. The company was founded in 1997 by Rebecca MacDonald, leveraging the deregulation of Ontario's natural gas industry. MacDonald, a Serbian Canadian entrepreneur, initially started an energy marketing company in 1986, and after that business faltered, she re-entered the market with Ontario Energy Savings Corp. in 1997, which became the foundation for Just Energy.

The company's business model centers on purchasing electricity and natural gas from the market and selling it to customers under fixed-price, variable-price, or price-protected contracts. Its profit margin is derived from the spread between its procurement cost and the retail price charged to customers. Just Energy's offerings include a variety of energy solutions, such as green energy products, carbon offsets, and solar incentive programs. The company operates through several subsidiary brands, including Amigo Energy, Hudson Energy, Tara Energy, and Terrapass.

Throughout its history, Just Energy expanded its operations into new markets, including the UK and Germany, and made several acquisitions to grow its business, such as Universal Energy Corporation in 2009 and Hudson Energy Group in 2010. However, the company has also faced significant challenges, including scrutiny and legal action over aggressive and allegedly deceptive sales practices. A pivotal moment occurred in March 2021 when financial pressures from the Texas power crisis forced the company to seek protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) in Canada and Chapter 15 in the US. Following a restructuring period, Just Energy emerged from CCAA proceedings in December 2022 after being acquired by a new ownership group, Pacific Investment Management Company LLC (PIMCO). More recently, in April 2025, IGS Energy announced an agreement to acquire Just Energy, a move that would create one of the largest energy retailers in North America.
