Junkbusters is a software-based waste management company established in Denmark in 2009. The founder, Steffen Rasmussen, was inspired after reading about a company in London that was praised for its service in the generally service-poor waste industry. This led him to research the market, purchase a small truck, and obtain the necessary license to start the company. The first job was completed on June 22, 2009.
The company operates on a model that connects customers with a network of local waste and transportation partners, giving them access to over 200 trucks. This asset-light approach is facilitated by a proprietary, scalable software platform that automates the matching of customer requests with independent service providers. This technology-first focus allows for efficient geographic expansion and underpins their service delivery. Revenue is generated by providing waste disposal services to a client base that includes private individuals, small and medium-sized businesses, retail, industry, and the construction sector.
Junkbusters offers a range of tailored waste solutions. Their "Affaldstaxa" (waste taxi) service, available in select Danish cities, involves a team collecting and removing bulky waste, with charges based on volume and time. For construction and garden waste, especially in space-constrained areas, the company provides "Junkbags," which are durable big bags available in two sizes. For larger waste volumes, they offer container services of various sizes suitable for different materials, from heavy debris like concrete to lighter waste. Customers can book services online or through an app, and the company provides digital environmental reporting that details waste types, quantities, recycling rates, and the CO2 footprint of both transport and processing.
Significant milestones include winning the E-Handelsprisen (E-commerce prize) in 2014 for digitalizing a conservative industry. The company expanded its operations internationally, entering Sweden in November 2011 and the German market in June 2015. By 2018, Junkbusters was active in Germany's 10 largest cities and had established a trading division to help local partners optimize the disposal of sorted waste.
