Journeys | The Road Home is a non-profit agency providing shelter, housing resources, and social services to individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The organization was formed in October 2001 through the merger of Northwest Suburban PADS, Inc. (created in 1989) and HOPE NOW, Inc. (created in 1992), two agencies that served the same population in Chicago's northwest suburbs. The merger, facilitated by a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant, allowed for a permanent location in Palatine, Illinois, and an expansion of services.
The agency operates several core programs. The HOPE Center is a daytime resource center providing a wide array of free services, including a food pantry, clothing, meals, laundry and shower facilities, and transportation assistance. It also offers professional case management for housing, vocational, and mental health counseling, along with referrals for medical and legal services. The PADS Shelter Program, in partnership with faith-based communities, offers safe overnight shelter, meals, and support services. Journeys also runs an On-Site Shelter for individuals with higher barriers to housing stability, such as mental health issues or physical disabilities, and an Interim Housing program. The Pathways Housing Readiness program assists clients in the process of securing permanent housing and provides ongoing support to ensure stability.
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Journeys is funded through a diverse mix of sources, including federal and local governments, individual donors, corporate grants, foundations, and community fundraisers. The organization serves 37 towns in north and northwest suburban Cook County. The agency is led by Executive Director Beth Nabors.
