The story of Jonathan Adler's design company begins not in a boardroom, but at a potter's wheel. After leaving a job in the film industry, founder Jonathan Adler pursued his passion for pottery. The turning point came in 1993 when Barneys New York placed an order for his collection of pots. This initial success was the launchpad for the brand. Five years later, in 1998, he opened his first store in SoHo, New York. From those ceramic beginnings, the company expanded its vision. Jonathan's desire to furnish an entire home led to a broader range of products including furniture, lighting, and home accessories. A key step in scaling production was a partnership in 1997 with Aid to Artisans, a non-profit that connected him with craftspeople in Peru. This allowed the business to grow beyond what one person could produce. Today, the company operates stores in the US and UK, alongside a global wholesale business with over 1,500 locations. A significant event in the company's journey occurred in late 2024 when the private equity firm Consortium Brand Partners (CBP) acquired the Jonathan Adler brand for an undisclosed amount. This was the second private equity deal for the company, which had previously sold a stake to GF Capital in 2008. Adler remains in his role as Chief Creative Officer, with the acquisition aiming to expand the brand's retail footprint and product offerings.
