Jiuzhang (Jinan) Quantum Technology Co., Ltd. is a company that emerged from the team behind the "Jiuzhang" photonic quantum computer prototype at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). The company was established in November 2022. The executive director and chief scientist is Professor Lu Chaoyang, a physicist with a Ph.D. from Cambridge University and a professor at USTC.
The original "Jiuzhang" quantum computer prototype, developed by a research team led by Pan Jianwei and Lu Chaoyang from USTC, was announced on December 4, 2020. Named after an ancient Chinese mathematical text, this machine was the first light-based quantum computer to demonstrate quantum supremacy by solving a Gaussian boson sampling problem in 200 seconds, a task estimated to take the world's fastest supercomputer at the time billions of years. This achievement established China as the second country to reach this milestone, following Google's Sycamore processor in 2019, but utilized a different, photon-based hardware approach. Subsequent iterations, Jiuzhang 2.0 (2021) and Jiuzhang 3.0 (2023), demonstrated significant advancements, with the latter detecting 255 photons and solving the problem 10 quadrillion times faster than supercomputers.
Jiuzhang Quantum Technology focuses on the entire R&D and production chain of photonic quantum computing. The business model includes developing specialized quantum simulators with applications in quantum chemistry and machine learning, and eventually, building fault-tolerant universal quantum computers. The company also provides key components and advanced optoelectronic products like high-performance lasers for use in quantum optics, research, and industrial applications. Furthermore, Jiuzhang Quantum Technology has an educational branch dedicated to creating quantum education products and fostering talent in the field, which it views as a national strategic priority.
