Jellyfish Pictures was a British animation and visual effects (VFX) studio founded in 2001 by Philip Dobree and Will Rockall. Initially a small team, the company grew into a globally respected studio with offices in London, Sheffield, Mumbai, and Toronto, employing over 500 artists. The business provided comprehensive services, from concept to final delivery, for feature films, episodic series, documentaries, and advertising. Its business model focused on delivering high-quality, stylistically versatile productions at a competitive price point, serving major clients like Disney, Netflix, DreamWorks, Lucasfilm, Apple TV+, and HBO.
The company was known for its work on high-profile projects, including VFX for the "Star Wars" franchise ("Rogue One," "The Last Jedi"), "The Book of Boba Fett," and "Stranger Things," as well as feature animation for films like "Spirit: Untamed" and "The Twits". Jellyfish Pictures was an early adopter of cloud-based virtual studios, a technological shift that enabled it to operate a global, hybrid workforce long before the pandemic and scale its operations efficiently. In 2017, the studio launched Jellyfish Originals, a division dedicated to developing and producing its own animated content for the children's entertainment market.
Despite its creative success and a minority investment from Key Capital Partners in 2022 to fuel expansion, the company faced significant financial headwinds. Citing the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising operational costs, and the 2023 industry strikes, Jellyfish Pictures suspended all operations in March 2025 and entered administration. In June 2025, the company's legacy was succeeded by JFX, a new entity launched by Troubadour Studios, which reunited the core VFX team.
