Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (JASM) is a joint venture established in December 2021, located in Kikuyo, Kumamoto, Japan. The company operates as a semiconductor foundry and is majority-owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), with Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Denso, and Toyota Motor Corporation holding minority stakes. The formation of JASM marks a significant strategic initiative to bolster Japan's domestic semiconductor production, with strong support from the Japanese government.
The business was initiated to address the globally high demand for semiconductors. The primary clients are in the automotive, industrial, consumer, and high-performance computing (HPC) sectors. The first fabrication plant (fab) began construction in April 2022 and is targeting production by the end of 2024. Following rising customer demand, an expansion was announced in February 2024 to build a second fab, with construction planned to start by the end of 2024 and operations to begin by the end of 2027. The total investment in the Kumamoto site is projected to exceed $20 billion.
JASM's fabs will manufacture semiconductors on 12-inch wafers. The first fab will utilize 40nm, 22/28nm, and 12/16nm FinFET process technologies, primarily for image sensor ASICs and automotive applications. The second fab will add 6/7nm process technology to the portfolio. Once both fabs are fully operational, the combined monthly production capacity is expected to exceed 100,000 wafers, creating over 3,400 high-tech jobs. The business model is centered on providing contract manufacturing (foundry) services for its partner companies and other customers, leveraging TSMC's pioneering pure-play foundry expertise.
