J-Palm Liberia, founded in 2013 by Mahmud Johnson, is a social enterprise addressing inefficiencies in Liberia's wild palm oil sector. The company was conceptualized after Johnson, during a university break from studying economics in the US, learned from his aunt about the unreliability of palm oil suppliers, which bankrupted her business. This personal connection, combined with his desire to use business to solve social problems in post-conflict Liberia, led to the creation of J-Palm.

The company's business model is centered on empowering smallholder palm collectors. J-Palm provides modern, efficient mini-mills to rural communities, which significantly reduce processing time and increase oil yield. Farmers use these mills at no upfront cost and in return, J-Palm receives a percentage of the oil produced. A pivotal moment came when Johnson noticed that farmers were burning or discarding palm kernels, the byproduct of oil extraction. Recognizing their value, J-Palm began purchasing these previously wasted kernels, creating a new income stream for farmers.

J-Palm processes these kernels to produce palm kernel oil, which forms the basis of its consumer product line, Kernel Fresh. The Kernel Fresh brand includes a range of skin and hair care products such as soaps, moisturizers, and conditioners, which are sold in both local and international markets. The company also aggregates and sells the crude palm oil it collects from farmers. Furthermore, J-Palm is developing "SuperCoal," an eco-friendly charcoal made from palm kernel shells, as a clean energy alternative to wood charcoal. To enhance supply chain integrity, the company has developed mobile apps using blockchain technology for improved transparency and traceability from harvesting to sales.

The enterprise has shown significant growth, expanding from one processing facility in 2014 to operating in over 90 villages and working with more than 10,000 smallholder farmers. This model not only creates jobs but has also been reported to more than double the income of participating farmers. The company has received multiple awards and grants, including from the African Entrepreneurship Awards, Johnson & Johnson Africa Innovation Challenge, and the United States African Development Foundation (USADF), which have been instrumental in its scaling efforts.
