IWeb Technologies, founded in 1996 by Eric Chouinard and Martin Leclair, established itself as a Canadian provider of internet hosting and IT infrastructure services. Headquartered in Montreal, the company initially operated under the name Formatek before consolidating its web services into the iWeb brand in 1998 and setting up its first server hosting facilities.
The firm's business was centered on providing high-performance dedicated servers, cloud hosting, and colocation services from its data centers. Its offerings catered to a global clientele, serving thousands of businesses in over 150 countries. The business model focused on Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), delivering solutions that included dedicated servers, private clouds, security services, and colocation. IWeb's product suite was designed to support clients at various stages of their growth, from startups requiring a single server to larger enterprises needing complex, hybrid solutions across multiple data centers.
A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by the Atlanta-based IT infrastructure provider Internap Network Services Corp. (INAP) in a deal valued at approximately $145 million, which closed in late 2013. This acquisition was a strategic move for Internap to enhance its IaaS capabilities and expand its market to include the small and medium-sized business (SMB) segment, immediately adding 10,000 SMB customers to its portfolio. At the time of the acquisition, iWeb had reported revenues of $44 million. Following the Internap era, iWeb was acquired again in 2021, this time by Leaseweb, a Dutch cloud computing and web services company.
