iOnRoad was an Israeli company founded in 2011 by CEO Alon Atsmon and CTO Dan Atsmon as a subsidiary of PicItUp Corporation. The firm developed a mobile application that functioned as an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS).
The application utilized a smartphone's camera, GPS, and sensors to monitor the vehicle's position on the road. Its core functionalities included forward-collision warnings, lane departure alerts, and headway monitoring, all delivered through audio-visual cues. The app used augmented reality to overlay a visual representation on the road ahead, indicating safe following distances with color codes—green for safe, yellow for caution, and red for danger. It could run in the background, allowing users to operate other applications like navigation or music, and would only surface with full-screen alerts when a potential hazard was detected. Additional features included a car locator that saved the user's parking spot, speed sign detection, and integration with phone and music apps from its main dashboard.
iOnRoad operated on a freemium model, offering a free version of the application with a premium version available for a fee. The app was initially launched for Android devices and saw rapid adoption, with over 200,000 downloads in the first two months. The company gained significant recognition, winning the CES innovation, design, and engineering award in 2012 and the Qualcomm QPrize in 2013. In April 2013, after raising capital from investors including Qualcomm Ventures, Keydan Capital, and Iconic Private Equity Partners, iOnRoad was acquired by Harman International Industries for a reported $8.5 million. The acquisition was intended to integrate iOnRoad's ADAS algorithms into Harman's in-vehicle infotainment systems and head-up displays, while the standalone app continued to be available on app stores.
