Interwoven Inc. was a significant player in the enterprise content management (ECM) market, founded in 1995 by Peng T. Ong. Ong, who also co-founded Match.com, led the company through its initial public offering on NASDAQ on October 8, 1999, which raised $55 million. The company specialized in software that helped organizations manage and leverage their digital content to enhance business growth, improve customer experiences, and streamline processes.
The firm's business model revolved around providing a suite of software products and services to large organizations, including professional services firms and government entities. Its flagship product, TeamSite, was a web content management system designed for creating complex intranet and internet applications. Another key offering was WorkSite, a document management system for storing, indexing, and searching documents and emails, which became particularly strong in the legal market. Interwoven expanded its capabilities through strategic acquisitions, such as purchasing collaboration software maker iManage in 2003 for $171 million to offer a more comprehensive content lifecycle management package.
The company's trajectory involved a series of high-profile acquisitions. In January 2009, UK-based Autonomy Corporation acquired Interwoven for approximately $775 million in cash, aiming to combine Autonomy's search technology with Interwoven's content management client base. Subsequently, Hewlett-Packard (HP) acquired Autonomy in a controversial $11.7 billion deal in 2011, and the Interwoven product lines were integrated into HP Autonomy. The journey of the original Interwoven technology continued when, in 2016, OpenText acquired a range of customer experience software assets, including the former Interwoven products like TeamSite, from HP Inc. for $170 million.
