Intelligent Point of Sale Limited, which was rebranded as Zettle Pro, developed an electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) application for the iPad. The company was founded in October 2012 by Robin Knox and Paul Walton in Edinburgh, Scotland. Knox, an audio-visual entrepreneur, and Walton, an ex-software developer for a major bank, conceived the idea after experiencing frustration with the outdated and expensive POS systems available when setting up a separate business. They aimed to create a more affordable and user-friendly solution for small and medium-sized businesses.
The firm's cloud-based EPOS system, initially called intelligentpos, catered primarily to the hospitality, retail, and mobile business sectors. Its features included stock control, table management, customer loyalty programs, and detailed live reporting accessible from anywhere. The business model was subscription-based, offering its software-as-a-service (SaaS) to clients. In September 2016, the Swedish financial technology company iZettle acquired Intelligent Point of Sale to integrate the EPOS system into its own mobile payment services. This acquisition allowed businesses to manage card payments and utilize a comprehensive suite of management features through a single integrated platform. Following iZettle's own acquisition by PayPal in 2018, the product was eventually discontinued on June 1, 2024.
