Based in Montreal, Canada, Immunio was established on October 24, 2013, by co-founders Zaid Al Hamami and Mike Milner. Al Hamami, who served as the CEO, brought a robust background in technology and cybersecurity, with a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering from McGill University and an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management. His prior experience included leadership roles at Canonical and SITA, which provided him with extensive knowledge in managing technology infrastructure and operations. The company was born from the founders' belief that the market lacked a security solution that was both effective and user-friendly.
Immunio operated in the application security market, providing a Real-time Web Application Security (RASP) platform. This technology was designed to protect web applications and APIs from a variety of digital threats, including SQL injection and cross-site scripting. The platform's key function was to detect vulnerabilities within an application, block attacks in real-time, and provide developers with the necessary information to remediate the issues. This approach catered to companies with a DevOps lifecycle, allowing them to integrate security directly into their application development process. The company generated revenue by selling its platform to clients, which supported a range of web frameworks, including Ruby on Rails and Python.
Throughout its operation, Immunio secured a total of $8 million in funding from various Canadian and international venture capital firms, including WhiteStar Capital, Real Ventures, Hoxton Ventures, and BDC. A significant milestone was a $5 million Series A funding round in April 2016, led by White Star Capital. On November 27, 2017, the cybersecurity firm Trend Micro announced its acquisition of Immunio for an undisclosed sum. This acquisition was a strategic move for Trend Micro to enhance its hybrid cloud security solutions and expand its automated protection capabilities throughout the DevOps lifecycle. Following the acquisition, Immunio's technology was integrated into Trend Micro's offerings, and its team of application security experts joined the larger company. Zaid Al Hamami transitioned to the role of VP of Application Security at Trend Micro before founding another cybersecurity company, boostsecurity.io, in 2020.
