Ilumivu offers a digital health software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform designed for healthcare providers, health plans, and research organizations. The company operates in the digital therapeutics and remote patient monitoring market. Its business model is centered on providing subscription-based access to its platform, which enables customers to monitor patients and research participants with various health conditions. Revenue is generated through these subscriptions, allowing researchers to deploy studies without needing to hire app developers.

Founded in 2009 by Kat and Mark, the company's origin stems from a personal need to find better ways to measure outcomes and track progress for families managing autism. They developed an online, parent-centered platform to monitor daily changes in symptoms, behaviors, and treatments. Co-founder Mark Tuomenoksa has a background as an engineer and executive at Bell Labs Research, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies, and holds degrees in computer science. This initial platform evolved into the current mEMA (mobile Ecological Momentary Assessment) system. The system is used by over 70 organizations for more than 100 clinical projects. In October 2021, Ilumivu acquired Cardiogram, a cardiovascular health monitoring app, and secured a Series A funding round from Health Catalyst Capital to support the acquisition and commercialization efforts.

The core of Ilumivu's offering is its mEMA platform, a patient-centered software system that captures multimodal behavioral data streams. It allows researchers and clinicians to create and send customized surveys and notifications to participants' smartphones. The platform integrates data from the phone's sensors—like location and ambient light—and from third-party wearable devices, such as those from Garmin, to collect objective data like heart rate, stress, and sleep patterns. A key feature is delivering 'just-in-time' adaptive interventions based on individualized patient data to improve care outcomes.

Following its acquisition, Ilumivu integrated Cardiogram's capabilities for continuous cardiovascular monitoring. The Cardiogram app, compatible with wearables from Apple, Google, Fitbit, and Garmin, uses a neural network to identify undiagnosed conditions like atrial fibrillation, hypertension, diabetes, and sleep apnea. A joint study with the University of California demonstrated its ability to detect atrial fibrillation with 97% accuracy. This allows health plans to identify at-risk members for early intervention, aiming to reduce the total cost of care.
