Based in Austin, Texas, Illumitex was established in 2005 by Matt Thomas, Dung Duong, and Paul Winberg. The company initially focused on developing and manufacturing specialized LED lighting for controlled environment agriculture (CEA), such as indoor and vertical farms. Founder Dung Duong was the chief inventor behind the company's original patented ideas, drawing on his experience in designing imaging and high-brightness optics. The company's first product line, "Aduro," launched in 2010 and featured square-shaped LEDs designed to provide more uniform light coverage than traditional round LEDs.
Illumitex's business model originally centered on selling its patented LED technology to other lighting manufacturers but shifted in 2012 to producing its own lighting fixtures. The company's patented technology integrated the secondary optic at the LED dye level, which created a smaller, more efficient product by controlling the light directly from the source. This technology was applied to industrial and architectural lighting, but the primary customer base consisted of greenhouses and vertical farms. Clients used the lighting to cultivate a variety of plants, including vegetables, leafy greens, and cannabis, benefiting from increased yields and significant energy savings.
In a significant strategic shift, Illumitex pivoted in February 2020 to become a pure-play agricultural technology company named FarmVisionAI, ceasing its LED lighting operations. This new direction leveraged the company's decade of experience in horticulture to focus on computer vision and artificial intelligence for the CEA market. The FarmVisionAI platform was designed to provide growers with visualization, augmented intelligence, and labor management tools. Using high-resolution cameras and cloud-based AI, the system allowed for remote monitoring of every plant, automated digital scouting to detect anomalies, and tracking of farm labor activities. The service aimed to help growers prevent crop loss, increase average weight, and achieve faster crop turns. Despite this pivot, the new venture was short-lived, and the company filed for an assignment for the benefit of creditors in December 2020, effectively going out of business.
