Ike Robotics

Ike Robotics, founded in 2018, was a developer of autonomous driving technology specifically for the trucking industry. The company was established by Alden Woodrow, Jur van den Berg, and Nancy Sun, all of whom are veterans of prominent tech companies like Apple, Google, and Uber's Advanced Technologies Group. Woodrow, the CEO, previously led the Google X Makani project, while van den Berg and Sun have backgrounds in Apple's special projects group and Otto, the self-driving truck startup acquired by Uber. The company's name is a nod to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was instrumental in the creation of the U.S. Interstate Highway System.

The firm focused on creating a full-stack automation solution for Class 8 trucks operating on interstate highways. Ike's business model was centered on providing a Software as a Service (SaaS) subscription to trucking fleets. Their customers would purchase trucks from original equipment manufacturers already fitted with Ike's validated automation system. This approach involved a "handoff" system, where human drivers would handle the complex navigation within facilities, while the automated system would take over for the long-haul highway portions of the journey. The technology, which included sensors, computers, and software, was designed to improve safety and operational margins for their clients. A distinctive part of Ike's strategy was licensing the core autonomous software stack from Nuro, a company specializing in last-mile autonomous delivery, and then building upon it for long-haul trucking applications. This relationship was foundational, as Nuro held an equity stake in Ike from its early days.

In September 2020, Ike announced significant partnerships with major logistics companies, including DHL, Ryder, and NFI Industries, to equip 1,000 of their trucks with its technology. However, in December 2020, Ike was acquired by Nuro for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was described as a natural progression of their close partnership, with the Ike team and their technology being integrated into Nuro to accelerate a shared mission. Prior to the acquisition, Ike had raised $52 million in a Series A funding round in February 2019.
