In 1989, a new player emerged in the European space scene: Ibérica del Espacio, or Iberespacio. The company wasn't building rockets, but something just as critical: the thermal control systems that keep satellites and spacecraft from freezing or overheating in the harsh environment of space. They developed and manufactured specialized hardware like heat pipes and multi-layer insulation, becoming a key supplier for the industry. Over the years, Iberespacio participated in over 50 space missions, launching nearly a thousand pieces of hardware into orbit. A significant chapter in the company's story unfolded in late 2022. The Spanish technology group ARQUIMEA acquired 100% of Iberespacio from the engineering and construction firm Técnicas Reunidas for €19 million. This wasn't just a simple change of ownership. ARQUIMEA, a major industrial partner for the BeetleSat telecommunications constellation, saw a strategic opportunity. The acquisition provides ARQUIMEA with Iberespacio's 10,000-square-meter manufacturing facility in Torrejón de Ardoz, which is slated to produce over 200 satellites for the new constellation. The move positions the combined entity as a more significant, end-to-end supplier in the growing global space market.
