Huochebang, also known as Truck Alliance, was established to address inefficiencies within China's vast yet fragmented road logistics market. Founded by Dai Wenjian in 2011, the company is headquartered in Guiyang, China. Dai, a co-founder of the lighting company Osram, identified the high costs and inefficiencies in logistics during his tenure there and subsequently ventured into the sector himself. He recognized that the absence of a public freight capacity pool led to elevated transport costs and saw an opportunity for consolidation. Huochebang launched its app in 2013, creating a digital platform to connect shippers directly with truck drivers, a significant shift from the traditional model reliant on intermediaries and personal networks.
The company's platform operates as an online-to-offline service, providing a digital marketplace for freight matching. It primarily serves China's large population of individual truck owners and shippers of all sizes. The core service of matching cargo with available trucks aims to reduce empty-load rates, which saves fuel costs and lowers carbon emissions. Huochebang’s business model does not rely on commissions from these freight transactions. Instead, revenue is generated through a suite of value-added services offered to its user base. These services include the sale of toll cards, truck financing, insurance brokerage, second-hand truck sales, and other solutions tailored to the needs of truck drivers and logistics companies.
A pivotal moment in the company's history occurred in November 2017 when Huochebang merged with its primary competitor, Yunmanman, to form a new entity called Manbang Group, also known as Full Truck Alliance. This merger ended a period of intense competition and created a dominant player in China's digital freight market. Following the merger, the Huochebang and Yunmanman brands continued to operate independently while leveraging shared data to improve overall efficiency. The combined entity, Manbang Group, has since become a leading global digital freight platform, raising substantial capital from prominent investors like Tencent, Baidu Capital, All-Stars Investment, and SoftBank's Vision Fund.
