Hungr GmbH

Hungr GmbH was a Berlin-based startup founded in March 2015 by seasoned entrepreneur Rasmus Wolff, who previously served as the Chief Development Officer at Just Eat. The company aimed to disrupt the food delivery market by offering a curated and simplified mobile ordering experience.

The business operated as a B2C marketplace, earning a commission on orders. Its unique selling proposition was a dish-first approach; users would first select the type of food they were craving, and the app would then present a curated list of the best-rated local restaurants offering that dish. This model focused on partnering with only top-performing restaurants to ensure a high-quality consumer experience. The company successfully raised a seed round of half a million euros from business angels, including Treatwell co-founder Laurens Groenendijk, to fuel its initial growth and beta phase.

Despite early optimism and plans for an international rollout, Hungr GmbH ceased operations in March 2016, approximately a year after its launch. The primary reason for the closure was the inability to compete with heavily funded, larger players in the food delivery sector, such as Delivery Hero. These established competitors dominated the market with extensive marketing budgets and discount campaigns that a small, seed-funded startup could not match. The company, which had a team of eight employees, was ultimately shut down, and founder Rasmus Wolff transitioned to advising other startups.
