Human Development Company (HDC) provides Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services, professional consulting, and customized training for organizations. Founded in 1978 by Dr. George Perkins, HDC was the first EAP in Kentucky. Dr. Perkins was motivated to start the company due to his wife's and others' experiences with mental health issues.
The company operates as an external consultant, developing service packages tailored to each client's organizational culture. Its services include confidential assessments, short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and referrals. The business model is designed to help companies reduce absenteeism, manage health benefit costs, retain employees, and improve productivity. In the early 1990s, Dr. Perkins took on Terry Mattingly and Barbara Kottke as business partners. He fully retired in 2007, and in 2008, the company was sold to Daniel Lee, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Under Lee's leadership as CEO, HDC expanded its services nationwide by acquiring three other EAP companies.
