Originating as a small, family-style dessert shop in Sai Kung, the business was established with an initial investment of HK$30,000, which first funded a small shoe store before the founders ventured into fashion and finally the dessert business.

The company specializes in handmade, Hong Kong-style desserts, with a strong emphasis on fruit-based creations, particularly those featuring mango and durian. Signature items include Mango Pomelo & Sago and Durian Pancakes. The business model is centered on operating a chain of dessert cafes in high-traffic areas like shopping malls, targeting a broad consumer base that enjoys traditional Chinese sweets with a modern twist. The company operates on a direct sales model and utilizes its own central factory system to ensure consistency and quality across its locations.

Honeymoon Dessert began its expansion into mainland China around 2005, establishing a Shanghai headquarters in 2010 to fuel its growth. At its peak, the chain operated nearly 500 stores in mainland China. The company has also expanded internationally, with franchise locations in Indonesia, Singapore, and Canada, and plans to open its first European flagship store in London. In 2021, the private equity fund ADV Partners completed a merger and acquisition of Honeymoon Dessert's operations in Hong Kong, South China, and East China, unifying the brand globally. In May 2022, the company merged with the new tea brand Tea Buds, and its parent company, Zhigang Group, completed a new round of strategic financing.
