Founded in 2013 by Mark Zmarzly, Hip Pocket emerged from his seven years of experience in the consumer banking industry and a desire to address the lack of accessible financial information for consumers. The company's inception traces back to a Global Startup Weekend in 2012, where Zmarzly pitched an idea for an app to help people make better financial decisions. This initial concept, originally named Fiscal Circles, evolved into Hip Pocket.
Hip Pocket developed a financial planning application designed to generate qualified mortgage or retirement leads for the banking industry. Operating as a platform for debt consolidation and peer comparison, it allowed users to evaluate their mortgage, retirement, or auto loans against those of their peers. The platform advised users on whether refinancing their loans could lead to savings, thereby creating leads for which it charged commissions to banks and credit unions. This model aimed to empower consumers to make more informed decisions when selecting a mortgage or refinancing a loan.
The company's journey included several funding rounds, raising a total of $200K over three rounds, with its latest Seed round in June 2017 securing $50K from investors like the Civic Accelerator. In 2017, the company also spun out Hip Money, a savings application specifically targeting millennials. Demonstrating a global ambition, Hip Pocket received a Hot DesQ grant from the Advance Queensland government in late 2017 to explore expansion into Australia. The venture concluded with its acquisition by T Mobile Apps (later known as Plinqit) on August 27, 2019, which integrated Hip Pocket's technology to complement its suite of financial wellness products.
