Hinckley Group Africa is a joint British/Nigerian-owned information technology solutions company established in 1998. The founder, Michael Clews, has over 25 years of experience as a Telecommunications Engineer in Nigeria. The firm began as a telecommunications consultancy for the oil and gas industry before shifting to IT services in the early 2000s and becoming the first authorized HP service provider in Nigeria.
The company operates through three main divisions: Hinckley IT Services, Hinckley IT Training, and Hinckley IT Recycling. Hinckley IT Services provides comprehensive IT maintenance, including hardware and software support, and is the exclusive West African distributor for Nuance SafeCom print management software. Hinckley IT Training offers professional courses from Microsoft, Cisco, and Oracle. The third division, Hinckley Recycling, is a prominent e-waste management and secure data destruction provider. It was the first registered electronic waste recycler in Nigeria. This unit processes various electronics, refurbishing items for reuse, reclaiming components, and recycling materials in compliance with environmental regulations.
In recent years, the recycling division has gained significant traction, representing 30% of the company's total revenue as of 2020. The company has secured investment to build Nigeria's first dedicated lithium-ion and lead-acid battery recycling plants, with a goal of processing up to 30,000 tonnes of e-waste annually. Hinckley has also engaged in partnerships to develop second-life battery solutions, including a project to power telecom towers and another to create battery packs for fridge-freezers in the cold chain sector. The company serves major clients like Samsung, HP, and Lumos. It works to formalize the informal e-waste collection sector by creating safer income opportunities.
