Hibernia Networks, formally known as Hibernia Atlantic, operated as a provider of global telecommunication services, specializing in high-speed network connectivity. The company was founded in 2003 by Ken Peterson of Columbia Ventures Corporation (CVC), which acquired transatlantic submarine cable systems built by Tyco Submarine Systems for 360networks at a cost of $962 million before the dot-com bubble burst. Hibernia began carrying traffic in 2005 and was eventually acquired by GTT Communications, Inc. in January 2017 for approximately $607 million.
Hibernia Networks owned and operated a substantial global network that included terrestrial and subsea fiber assets, connecting North America, Europe, and Asia. The company's infrastructure featured five subsea cables, notably the Hibernia Express, which provided the lowest latency fiber-optic path between New York and London. Its network spanned 25 countries with over 100 points of presence, managing cable landing stations in key locations such as Dublin, Ireland; Halifax, Canada; and Lynn, Massachusetts, in the United States.
The business catered to a diverse client base, including financial services, media and entertainment, web-centric companies, and telecom service providers. For the financial sector, it offered low-latency routes to financial exchanges and data centers. Its revenue model was based on providing secure and diverse optical transport, Ethernet services from 10 Mbit/s to 100 Gbit/s, IP transit, and dedicated cloud connectivity. The company also expanded into media services through strategic acquisitions, such as MediaXstream in 2009 and the Media Connect assets from TeliaSonera International Carrier in 2012, becoming a significant player in DTM Video Transport.
