Hiatus Tequila, founded in 2017 by Kristopher DeSoto and David Osher, is a spirits brand focused on producing traditional, additive-free tequila. Headquartered in Manhasset, New York, the company was born from DeSoto's desire to bring the authentic, robust flavors of Mexican tequila to the U.S. market. DeSoto, who previously worked in international helicopter sales, spent over seven years living in Mexico, where he developed a deep appreciation for traditionally made tequila, noticing a stark difference compared to the often sweeter, additive-laden products available in the States. This experience, coupled with a passion for travel that took him to over 50 countries, shaped his vision for a transparent, high-quality spirit.
The company operates on a direct-to-consumer and distribution business model, selling its products through an online shop, as well as on- and off-premise accounts in markets like New York and New Jersey. Hiatus Tequila partners with La Cofradía, a family-owned distillery with over 50 years of experience, located in Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. This partnership ensures a meticulous production process rooted in tradition. The brand emphasizes its "ground-to-glass" story, using only 100% fully mature Blue Weber agave, which is allowed to ripen for up to eight years. The agave piñas are slow-cooked in traditional masonry ovens for 36-40 hours and then gently pressed with a custom screw press to extract the sweet nectar without introducing bitterness. The resulting spirit is double-distilled in copper pot stills.
Hiatus offers three core expressions: Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo, all at 40% ABV. The Blanco is unaged, presenting clear with notes of roasted agave, fresh-cut grass, and tropical fruit. The Reposado is aged for six months in reclaimed American whiskey barrels, which imparts a pale straw color and notes of caramel, cinnamon, hazelnut, and vanilla. The Añejo rests for a full year in American oak, resulting in a honey color and aromas of dried herbs, candied fruit, and toasted oak. The brand has received recognition for its quality, including a Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In 2023, Hiatus announced a partnership with and investment from MMA artist Michael Chandler, aiming to redefine celebrity collaborations in the spirits industry by focusing on authenticity and a shared respect for tequila heritage.
