Hence Technologies provides an AI-driven platform that enables corporations to manage relationships with external legal counsel and navigate geopolitical risks. Founded in 2020 by Steve Heitkamp, Sean West, and Arun Shanmuganathan, the company has dual bases in the UK and Kigali, Rwanda. The founders' collective expertise spans data science, geopolitical risk advisory, and mathematics. Heitkamp previously worked in data science at Palantir, West advised CEOs on risk, and Shanmuganathan was a mathematician in the computer science faculty at the African Leadership University.
The company initially focused on helping corporate legal departments select and manage outside law firms. Its engine uses data and AI to allow in-house teams to search for and choose legal counsel based on criteria such as expertise, location, and matter type, moving beyond traditional referral-based hiring. The platform analyzes a company's own data, including billing systems, to provide unbiased recommendations and manage performance with legal service providers.
In April 2025, Hence launched "Hence Global," an AI software product designed to help organizations monitor and manage geopolitical risks. This platform analyzes public data sources like news, SEC filings, and World Bank information to deliver tailored insights and risk mitigation suggestions. It serves both companies assessing their own vulnerabilities and professional services firms, like legal and consulting, that track information for their clients. The service is offered through a subscription model, with an 'Essentials' tier priced at $150 per month. By March 2022, Hence Technologies had raised a total of $2.6 million in funding from investors including Daybreak Partners and Broad Creek Capital.
