Healthagen was founded in 2008 by two practicing emergency physicians, Dr. Peter Hudson and Dr. Wayne Guerra, as a developer of healthcare information software. The founders' experience in the emergency room directly influenced the creation of their flagship product, iTriage, a mobile and web-based platform designed to empower patients. This application allowed users to check symptoms, learn about potential causes and treatment paths, and locate nearby healthcare providers, including hospitals, complete with emergency room wait times.
The company's primary offering, iTriage, provided a consumer-facing tool that aimed to make accessing the healthcare system more efficient. A key milestone for the company was the acquisition of AppointmentCity.com in February 2011, which integrated appointment booking capabilities directly into the iTriage platform. This enhancement allowed users not only to research medical information but also to schedule appointments with physicians, urgent care centers, and other medical providers.
A significant turning point in Healthagen's history occurred in December 2011 when it was acquired by insurance giant Aetna for an undisclosed amount. At the time of the acquisition, the iTriage app had already achieved 3 million downloads and had established relationships with hundreds of hospitals. Following the acquisition, Aetna repositioned the Healthagen name in 2013 to serve as the brand for a new business division dedicated to health and technology services. This new Healthagen unit consolidated several of Aetna's previous acquisitions, including ActiveHealth Management and Medicity, to focus on population health management, clinical integration, and accountable care models. The division provided a suite of solutions including data exchange, advanced analytics, patient engagement, and care management to a diverse client base of health systems, provider organizations, payers, and employers.
