The company was founded in Munich, Germany, in 2015 by a team including Karim Tarraf (CEO), Yvonne Rusche (COO), Dr. Birgit Fullerton, and Matt Fullerton. The idea originated from Tarraf's win at the Technical University of Munich's "Think. Make. Start." hackathon, inspired by his upbringing in Cairo. Initially conceptualized as a wearable device for asthmatics, the founders pivoted towards a broader data-centric solution after realizing the need for more comprehensive environmental information.

The firm operates on a Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) model, offering hyperlocal data on air quality, noise, and microclimates. Its core technology combines data from its own network of IoT sensors, public monitoring stations, and satellites. Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, this data is correlated with factors like weather, traffic, and land use to create high-resolution air quality maps and predictive models. This allows for detailed analysis, forecasting up to 72 hours, and simulations for areas without physical sensors.

Clients, primarily cities, municipalities, and corporations, access this information through intuitive dashboards and APIs to integrate into their own systems. The service supports fact-based decision-making for urban planning, eco-sensitive traffic management, and environmental health initiatives. The accuracy of its measurement methods has been certified by TÜV Süd, enabling the data to be used for public and legal purposes. As of March 2023, the product portfolio and technology of Hawa Dawa were acquired by the BERNARD Gruppe, an engineering firm, to expand its environmental monitoring division.
