Founded in 2014 by Matt Tillman, Jeff Wehner, and Renée DiResta, Haven Inc. was established to automate and streamline logistics for large international supply chains. The company emerged from Tillman's personal experience attempting to ship a truck, which highlighted the inefficiencies of traditional freight procurement. This led to the development of a platform aimed at revolutionizing how global producers and logistics providers connect and operate. Prior to Haven, Tillman had a background in technology and product leadership roles in finance and AI, while Wehner brought supply chain expertise from his time at Apple and Nest.

Initially launched as a logistics quote marketplace, Haven evolved into a comprehensive Transportation Management System (TMS). This strategic pivot was driven by the realization that while existing TMS solutions stored information, they were ineffective at using that data to automate critical workflows. The Haven TMS platform was designed to manage the entire transportation logistics process, from procurement and booking to tracking and documentation, all within a single collaborative environment, aiming to replace inefficient email-based communication. The company catered primarily to commodity traders and food producers, facilitating billions in cargo value annually.

Haven's platform offered a suite of tools for shippers. Users could manage all their carrier rates in one place, instantly compare options, and book freight with any carrier. The system provided real-time shipment tracking through integration with carrier and AIS systems, alongside predictive alerts for potential delays. A significant component was the collaborative document management system, which streamlined the complex paperwork involved in international shipping. The platform also featured analytics tools that allowed customers to measure carrier performance based on metrics like on-time percentage and rate competitiveness, enabling data-driven negotiations and allocation decisions. The company generated revenue by charging a flat fee per container for port-to-port bookings.

The venture-backed company, with offices in San Francisco, Singapore, and Switzerland, secured a total of $19.2 million in funding over three rounds. Its journey as an independent entity concluded in April 2021 when it was acquired by FourKites, a market leader in real-time supply chain visibility. The acquisition led to the integration of Haven's technology into a new FourKites offering called Dynamic Ocean, combining Haven's document management and collaboration features with FourKites' end-to-end tracking capabilities to create a more comprehensive solution for international ocean shipments.
