HackHands operated as an on-demand marketplace providing live programming assistance to developers. The company was founded in 2013, with its origins as an idea incubated by the Brazilian development shop 6PS Group. The founding team included Geraldo Ramos, Assis Antunes (also cited as Assis Silva), and Forest Good. Ramos, an entrepreneur since age 17, and Silva, who built the HackHands platform, were also co-founders of 6PS Group. Good, with a background in strategy and technology consulting, connected with Ramos, and together they identified a market need for immediate, expert programming help.
The platform served developers who were stuck on coding problems, connecting them with a network of over 4,000 expert programmers for one-on-one assistance. This service was available 24/7, functioning as a '911' for coders. The business model was transactional, charging users $1 per minute for expert help. HackHands facilitated this interaction through a suite of tools including video and audio chat, as well as bi-directional screen sharing and text editing, ensuring efficient problem-solving. Beyond individual developers, the company also engaged the broader tech community through initiatives like HackPledge, which encouraged experts to mentor novice developers, and HackSummit, a virtual programming conference that attracted over 64,000 registrants.
In a significant milestone, Pluralsight, a prominent online technology training company, acquired HackHands on July 9, 2015, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was a strategic move for Pluralsight to expand its offerings beyond video tutorials and assessments by integrating live, real-time mentorship and collaborative learning into its ecosystem. Following the acquisition, the HackHands.com domain was sunsetted to focus on integrating its collaborative learning features within the main Pluralsight platform.
