In 1966, a venture began in Mexico City to provide business and finance news to a growing market. Founded by John Christman, Harvey Popell, and Gustavo Romero Kolbeck, Grupo Expansión started with a business bulletin that evolved into its flagship magazine, 'Expansión,' in 1969. The company's focus was clear: deliver in-depth analysis on the people and ideas driving Mexico's private sector. The company grew steadily, but the story's major turning point came in 2005. Eyeing international growth and fresh capital, Grupo Expansión was acquired by the U.S. media giant Time Inc. This move brought significant resources and integrated the Mexican publisher into a global media powerhouse, leading to the launch of digital portals and a partnership with CNN. The business was no longer just a publisher but a multi-platform media company. However, the playbook had another chapter. As Time Inc. restructured its own global operations, it sought a buyer for its Mexican subsidiary. In 2014, the Latin American private equity firm Southern Cross Group acquired Grupo Expansión. This marked a new phase of strategic shifts, including the sale of certain publications. The journey continued with another acquisition in 2017, when the company was acquired by Cinco M Dos, shaping the media group into what it is today.
