Grokstyle emerged from academic research in computer vision, founded in 2015 by Kavita Bala and Sean Bell. The company's creation was spurred by a paper they presented at the 2015 SIGGRAPH conference, which detailed a novel "click photo and search" technology. Bala, a computer science professor at Cornell University, and Bell, her doctoral student at the time, identified a significant market opportunity in applying fine-grained visual recognition to the retail sector. Their vision was to allow consumers to easily identify and purchase items from a simple photograph.

The firm developed an AI-based visual search and recommendation platform specifically for online retailers. Operating on a SaaS model, Grokstyle provided an API-based solution that retailers could integrate into their own applications and websites. The business model involved charging retailers a monthly subscription fee. The technology centered on deep neural networks and proprietary algorithms that could analyze an image, create a unique "visual fingerprint," and then compare it against millions of product images to find exact or visually similar items. This system was designed to answer consumer questions like, "what is it?" and "where can I buy it?" directly from an image.

Grokstyle initially focused on the home furnishings and decor market, securing a significant partnership with IKEA. The technology was integrated into IKEA's Place mobile app, enabling users to take a picture of furniture and receive suggestions for similar products from IKEA's catalog. This application demonstrated a clear value proposition by enhancing the consumer shopping experience and providing retailers with a tool to lift revenue. After raising $2.4 million in funding over several rounds, the San Francisco-based startup was acqui-hired by Facebook in February 2019. The entire Grokstyle team and its technology were absorbed into Facebook to enhance its AI capabilities, particularly within Facebook Marketplace.
