GroceryWorks, founded in 1998, was an early participant in the internet grocery retail sector, establishing its initial headquarters in Dallas, Texas. The company's business model focused on providing online grocery shopping and home delivery services, enabling consumers to order a wide range of products from fresh produce to national brands directly to their homes or offices. Initially, GroceryWorks developed its own distribution centers, each stocking thousands of items and serving a defined geographic area to ensure efficient delivery.
The company's trajectory involved significant partnerships and investments from major retail players. In 2000, the grocery chain Safeway Inc. made a substantial $30 million investment. This was followed in 2001 by a strategic partnership with the UK-based retailer Tesco, which acquired a 35% stake in the company for approximately $22 million, contributing capital and technical expertise from its own successful online operations. After a brief cessation of its original operations, GroceryWorks was relaunched in 2002 as a joint venture, with Safeway and Tesco as primary stakeholders.
The business model then evolved to more closely integrate with its parent company. GroceryWorks became the official online service provider for Safeway, operating the websites Safeway.com, Vons.com, and Genuardis.com in various markets across the United States. This iteration allowed customers to shop from the product selection of their local Safeway-owned stores at the same prices, with orders being fulfilled from those locations. In a final strategic move in October 2006, Safeway acquired all outstanding shares, turning GroceryWorks into a wholly-owned subsidiary to manage its e-commerce channel. The platform, as Safeway.com, has since become a fully integrated part of Safeway's retail operations, which were later merged with Albertsons.
